I’ve never experienced someone speaking in tongues. I’m interested in learning more about how it happens. Dennis makes it sounds like you just pop in the Chris Tomlin and next thing you know, your foretelling the future in some ancient language.

He says to watch out for spiritual pride, yet the whole article seems to be about how awesome he is because he speaks in tongues. I just don’t understand the purpose of it. I know it’s biblical, but it seems the only people doing it are the most zealous.

I don’t understand speaking in tongues, but I did grow up in a church where it was common (indeed, required for salvation), so it’s not foreign to me… except for the fact that it quite literally is!

It is an odd practice, but harmless unless used to claim spiritual superiority, as prophecy is to be sought rather than tongues, according to Paul.

Thanks for this. I also grew up in a denomination that taught that the supernatural gifts have ceased. I cannot find Biblical support for this view. I have never been given, nor have I sought, the gift of tongues, yet I do believe that it is a valid gift for the edification of the Body of Christ.

I really appreciate that you have emphasized Paul’s directions for maintaining order in the fellowship.

absolutely right! when i received that spiritual gifts, way back 2007.. i have the tendency that im being superior to other Christians but then my mentor entackled and remind me thats is For Me to be strengthen and be conscious during speaking in strange tounge because people might say” this girl s mentally incapacited, doing that crazinest.. It is easy to fall into that and it is hard to overcome unless we have a complete turn and we pray to God for enlightenment. (I’m one of those who fell into the speaking-in-tongue “spiritual pride”.)

Nice article, Dennis. I’ve always had a great deal of respect for the way VCF handles the spiritual gifts.
