Becoming aware of God’s Story in your Praying Life

God is the best author of our lives. He sees every thing we go through. He even sees the faith, the joy, the pain, the tears when we pray.

Sometimes we ask God, ” Lord I have been praying for this request for years and why isn’t it being answered?”

Let me tell you why. God is weaving a story.

We all know that God is sovereign. God is in control.

Unanswered prayers create some tensions in the story God is weaving in our lives.

It is no time to complain but it is a good time we ask ourselves,  “what pattern is God weaving?

Since our first year of church in Greenhills, we have been praying for a place to call our own. For four years we prayed and nothing happened. We thought it would be impossible to get a place. We thought God was saying no forever.

But God is weaving a story for our church. With our new place now, I realized why it wasn’t given to us in our first or second year. God was preparing the church. God was weaving first our character as a church before He gives us the place. He wanted us to be the church first to the city.

Sometimes we ask God, “Lord how long will it take?” To tell you honestly, some prayers would take 7 minutes, some 7 days, some 7 months, some 7 years, some 7 decades but no matter how long or short the wait is, the praying life is about becoming aware of the story God is doing in your life.

Happy 4th day of fasting!!!

Praying Life not Prayer Time

One of the mistake we make when it comes to prayer and fasting is that we usually categorize it as a prayer time. Most of us struggle in our prayer time because it is not natural for us to pray and we try to time prayer.

God is not calling us to have a prayer time, He wants us to have a praying life. A praying life is very different from prayer time. A praying life means we are conscious of God’s presence 24/7. Prayer is not scheduled. It happens. I am not saying don’t have a time for prayer but rather let me challenge you to start having a praying life and not just a prayer time.

Prayer is a journey. When we get stuck in prayer time, we try to hunt for “the feeling” when we pray. Prayer does not happen that way. Prayer is interconnected with all of life. This might sound radical or for some blasphemous but don’t make it a quest to experience prayer or God. You don’t experience God, you get to know Him.

Enjoy day 3 of the fast!!!

Fasting Notes: Return to Me with all your Heart

Joel 2:12-17

“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” 13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God,  for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God.15 Blow the trumpet in Zion,  declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber. 17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say, “Spare your people, LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”

Fasting is like Dinner with Good Friends

It is about the relationship and not the food. I don’t care if I am eating at Joillibee or Spiral. I get engrossed in the conversation and not the food. Ever wonder how we could stay in the dinner table for a really long time with good friends even if there are no more food served?

We got so engrossed with Jesus we forgot to eat. What sustains us is our desire to know Jesus.

Prayer is like talking with good friends. We don’t think of words but about whom we are talking to. Many people struggle in prayer because they focus on praying, not on God.

Enjoy day 2 of your fasting.

Pastor D’s letter to Victory Greenhills: The year of ……..

For the past two years it has been quite easy for God to communicate what he wanted the church to move in for the year. Two years ago, the word was EXTREME GENEROSITY and did we see God move in our church as the spirit of God touched the people to move in radical generosity.

Last year the word for the church was to move in the spirit of HONOR. Thus we started teaching and living out the spirit of honor in church.  We invited some of the city officials and honored them. We have seen a tremendous open door in the city and ended they year with us getting a place in VMALL because we have learned how to honor.

This year I was asking God what the word for the church was. For the past few weeks I have been waiting. I knew there was something but my spirit couldn’t just get  it. As we are entering our 7 day of fasting tomorrow, the Holy Spirit just impressed in my heart that the word God has for the church has been in front of me all along.

In fact the Spirit of God has been moving slowly to stir it up in our church. The word for our church this 2012 is that it will be the year of PRAYER. Since middle of 2011, God has been stirring something in the pastoral team and some key leaders in our church. We have mobilized our intercessory group and prayer partners as a church. We also have seen a stirring among our people as we started our worship night every other Tuesday. Also last year, we have started preaching the gospel to ourselves and reminding everyone that it is all by the grace of God.

And here is what I believe. The ultimate expression of the gospel is a praying life. A person who lives out the gospel knows that he cannot live life apart from Christ and thus we pray. I am excited for what God is about to do in our church this 2012 as we as a spiritual family pray and know God more through prayer.

To our leaders, please help spread the word that we are having nightly prayer meetings starting tomorrow till Thursday night. Prayer meeting starts sharply at 7pm. Expect God to show up in a mighty way. Excited for 2012!!! Click here to visit the official Victory 7 day fasting site

I Honor Pastor Jayson

It was a far shot. I knew it would take a miracle to convince this man to join the pastoral team of Greenhills but I had to obey God when He told me to give Jayson a shot. After our historical lunch, he took the offer.

Fast forward two years…. I glad I obeyed God and I glad he obeyed God.

I want to honor this man who has tremendously shouldered the burden of pastoring the church with me. Pastor Jlo is our lead pastor in our Wednesday service and our 6pm service. He brings a lot to our team. His passion for making disciples, training leaders and making a difference in the workplace through his ministry to entrepreneurs and business people have paved the way for our church to grow.

Many of you don’t know how loyal of a friend Pastor Jlo is. The sacrifices he makes and the extra long mile he gives to the people he cares and pastors is really worth emulating.

Bro, thanks for the friendship, the love and the passion to serve the church. Yo the man!!! Happy Birthday

Do you want to be a Church Planter?

A blog post by Jason Helopoulos

What should a church planter look like? Surely he must have gifts in preaching, teaching, leading, shepherding, etc. It is equally clear that he must have some ability to initiate and cast vision for a group of people. He must be a self-starter. And none of us would deny the essentials: that he is committed to preaching the Word of God, applying that same Word to the congregation, and that he have a faithful and active prayer-life. We also know that he must have a heart for the lost, the under-churched, and still be able to disciple those under his care.

I am not an expert on anything (except maybe Chicago Style-pizza and Diet Coke). And I don’t pretend to be an expert on church planting. But as I have reflected over my past four years as a church planter my understanding of what is necessary for faithful service in that field has become more well-informed. There are qualities I had not considered before that I would now say are essential. I would suggest that if a man isn’t marked by these attributes as well, he shouldn’t be considering or be considered for church planting. He must be:

  • Comfortable in Conflict: Who in the world likes conflict? Not many of us. And though a church planter surely does not enjoy it, he must be able to endure it. Maybe the greatest difference in church planting compared to more established churches, is that the church planter is “out front” by himself. There are no other pastors, elders, or leaders in the church, because the church isn’t established. This means there is no one to help carry the burden of conflict. And there is no other target for those seeking conflict. And conflict will come. You don’t have to be a prophet to make that prediction! A church planter must be able endure the burden (even alone) and continue to minister in the midst of it.
  • Have Knowledge of His Weaknesses: There are no buffers between a church planter and the congregation. The smallness of the work creates a close proximity physically, mentally, and spiritually. Due to this, a church planter will readily see his weaknesses reflected and adopted by the people under his care—often without their awareness. If he doesn’t know his weaknesses going in he will by the time he leaves. And at that point, it may be too late.
  • A “Multitasker”: I have a picture in my head. It is one we have all seen: a man holding sticks with multiple spinning plates residing atop them. How does he do it? I don’t know, but it is quite a balancing act. Welcome to church planting. A church planter is usually alone, at least to some degree. Therefore, he must be able to multi-task. There are so many areas of church life and ministry that will call upon him each day. He must be able to do anything from preaching to counseling to preparing orders of worship to washing nursery toys. He is the secretary, pastor, man-on-call, emergency ride, and nursery recruiter. On any given day, he will wear a myriad of hats. Does the average pastor? Yes. I would never argue otherwise. But the church planter usually does so to a greater degree.
  • Persevering: Let’s face it, some of us throw the towel in much earlier than others. There are those who labored through those two-a-day practices during high-school football and others who quit. A church planter must have a persevering personality. Because the ebbs and flows of church planting are quick hitting and continual. This week a family visits and shows interest. And it easy to ride the tide. But the next week two families announce they are leaving and your congregation shrinks in half. There will be weeks and even months that the average church planter wonders what they have gotten into and in those moments perseverance matters a great deal.
  • Able to Step-Aside: Having said that a church planter must be persevering we also must say that an equal attribute is that he  have it within him to step-aside when it is needed. It may be that he is laboring in an area that is difficult for the gospel to penetrate, he has labored for years, and that initial zeal and energy is dissipating. He must know when it is time to hand the reigns over to someone else or even to close the doors of the work. He must persevere, but be self-aware and humble enough to know when to step aside.
  • Humble: I know, all pastors (for that fact all Christians) are supposed to be humble. But in reality, this is a rare quality among men. But among church planters, it must be one of the chief qualities. Pride will kill the efforts of the church plant and his congregation faster than anything else.
  • Have a Love for All Types of People: Again, this seems to be a “no-brainer” and something that we should all embrace. But if we are honest, this is not the case. All kinds of people will be drawn to a church plant. This doesn’t happen to the same degree in well-established churches. As much as we would like it to be otherwise, established churches have reputations. They have been marked by many in the community as the upper-middle class church, the doctrinal church, the black church, the young church, the homeschool church, etc. But a church plant is seldom marked at the beginning. This means that all shades of people will come through the door. And the church planter must be ready in love to minister to all of them. I have found it fascinating to see how many hurting and needy people find their way into a church plant. They often do so, because they have access to the pastor. For some pastors, this is uncomfortable. If that is the case, then church planting isn’t for you.

Confronting your Pastor???

Hi Pastor Dennis. I’d like to ask what’s your take about having confrontational issues to pastors ’cause this year was tough between my church pastor and other members. The pastors are starting to do things unreasonably in the congregation which leads to devastating decrease in church members. It was so sad that I needed give it a thought of what is really happening. Now, is it wise to talk to these pastors? Is it right to say negative feelings towards them? Is it okay if they get offended?

I wouldn’t know what the pastor is doing but I would encourage the church to move in honor. What that means is not to blindly look at the other side but confront the pastor but in the most loving way since he is the shepherd of the church.

Personally I have two options when things like these happen and personally I would want our church members to do the same thing to me since I am now a pastor.

1. Honor me by going straight to me with their problems and complain. I feel that the pastor has the right to know how you feel so that he might be able to either repent or air his side. Most of the problems that happen in church is miscommunication. Honor him by not talking behind his back. Honoring also means not questioning his motives since no one can judge one’s motives.I also recommend if your church is run by a board of elders to go straight to the people who could do something about the problem.

2. Honor the pastor by transferring to another church if you cannot follow his leadership. I think ultimately the pastor will be liable and accountable to God for his actions and only God can change him. Also do not leave by spreading news about him. If you have confronted the pastor and he does not react positively or would not accept church discipline, there are other churches for you to go to. Find a pastor you can follow and be under authority.
