Promoted too soon

Posted by Dennis in leadership, volunteers on 03 5th, 2010 | 2 Comments
Every time we promote a leader we need to be sure he/she has been faithful in the small things because once we’ve promoted someone or empowered someone it is hard to unempower that person. Luke 16:10 ¶      “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. Some suggestions before empowering someone to leadership roles. 1. Find people who have led smaller groups. Do they have good interpersonal skills. Are they effective in leading small groups? If...

Take the blame, give the credit

Posted by Dennis in leadership, staff meetings, volunteers on 03 4th, 2010 | 1 Comment
When something bad happens in church – take responsibility. Take the blame. When a volunteer messes up in public- take the blame but talk to the volunteer privately. When a staff did not come through – take the blame publicly, reprimand privately. When something great happens – give the credit to your staff, leaders and volunteers. Never take the credit. When a staff does an amazing job – praise him/her publicly. Same thing with volunteers. That is leadership. I learned that from the pastors who have mentored me and I have seen how...

Leading Volunteers

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 03 2nd, 2010 | 2 Comments
“A good ministry leader will excel in developing collaboration, giving volunteers appropriate ownership, creating authentic relationships where team based ministry is the expectation and not just something that’s talked about. Leaders of volunteers do much more coaching than dictating. It’s that leadership style that keeps volunteers in the game.” - Tony Morgan

Psst… You ( Hoy… Ikaw)

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 02 27th, 2010 | No Comments
You want more volunteers in your church then you have to teach your current volunteers to tap the shoulder of their friend in church and tell tehm..psst..you volunteer. The best way to get volunteers in not by announcing on the web or in the pulpit. Relationships are the most effective way. To my friends here in the web PSSST….. IKAW… YOU…… VOLUNTEER!!!

confessions of a clueless pastor

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 02 24th, 2010 | No Comments
What in the world is volunteer management? I did not have a clue. I remember hearing the word 2 years ago but decided it was for the Peter Drucker’s of this world. But now it is making sense. The church is now on its 2nd year and for the past 2 years we have had 250 volunteers served us. Imagine the church being run by volunteers – w/c means you have to set a system to manage them. Empowered volunteers need to know what they should be doing. I learned the hard way. For the first two years of ministry we were just telling our people to do STUFF....

somebody has to pick the trash

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 02 23rd, 2010 | No Comments
I remember a year ago when we encountered a problem in our worship hall. People were dropping their candy wrappers on the floor. Our volunteers told us the problem and we got a quick solution. OWN THE CHURCH. It does not matter of you are part of the music ministry or the tech ministry or the kids ministry if you see a trash pick it up or the house won’t look good. I am proud of how our volunteers have owned up the responsibility to pick the trash. If you are volunteer in church – don’t get too much territorial with your scope of ministry....

The Volunteer Goal

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 02 6th, 2010 | 1 Comment
For the past two years we have literally survived with a very thin church staff. We have designed church to be this way to give people an opportunity to volunteer and serve Jesus – the highest privilege given to man. In our first year – I remember having only me and our admin Sheryn on the payroll. No office, no phones, no printers. We miraculously made it to year two. And now we are entering year 3 with 3 admin staff, 4 pastors, and 2 campus missionaries. How was that possible? VOLUNTEERS. 250+ volunteers for the last two years. Some who helped...

The Legend of Don Roque

Posted by Dennis in devotion, volunteers on 02 1st, 2010 | 5 Comments
Came from Dondon Rioque’s funeral Sunday night and was overwhelmed with hundreds of people waiting from outside because the room was packed. Who would have thought that a simple man like Don Roque would leave such a lasting legacy that people flocked to pay their last respect to this man. We heard his story last night. It was life changing. Dondon was an orphan. His parents left him when he was 8 months old. He grew up seeking for love and in the process of seeking for love he learned how to love. Dondon’s life was full of trials. He was diagnosed...

R.I.P. Dondon

Posted by Dennis in volunteers on 01 29th, 2010 | 8 Comments
Was in a wedding tonight when i received a text that Dondon – one of our most faithful volunteer died. I had to read the message 3x before it finally sinked in. Dondon – the guy who would faithfully bus the underprivileged kids to church every Sunday. Dondon – the usher who was always ready to serve the people Dondon – the faithful volunteer who would do more than what is expected without asking for any attention or recognition. Bro – I could never thank you enough for making this world a better place through your God-kind of...
